The CSO Facts & Figures Report is a document that summarises statistics to present information to the reader in an interesting and meaningful way. As a result, students do not have access to the raw data used to generate the summary and so there is a limit to the mathematical analysis students can perform. These activities thus act as a guide through the document, with students using questions involving percentages and charts and graphs to gain further meaning from the data, allowing them to interact and have a greater appreciation for the document and the information it presents.

The pack consists of a Question and Solution Pack. The question pack is in both word and pdf formats allowing teachers to amend or add to the questions and similarly the solution pack is delivered as both a powerpoint and pdf.

The Central Statistics Office Data Visualisation tool for Ireland’s top motors presents annual data on private cars, commercial vehicles, motor cycles and tractors in graphical form. It will allow users to follow trends in fuel types, colours and top makes. People can also rank their own car model for a particular month.

The Central Statistics Office Data Visualisation tool to track key indicators on the relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom. The information is displayed graphically and links directly to the CSO databank so that the most recent data available is always shown.

Calculating the average spend by Irish residents on trips to Great Britain and other countries.

The CSO Data Visualisation tool provides everyone with easy access to valuable information regarding the residential property market in a given area. To use it, people can enter the first three characters of their Eircode or type in the name of their area. They can then compare the average price of residential property sold in their area over the last 12 months with the national average price.

Compare the Median price of residential properties in your area to the National Median price of residential properties
Comment on the Distribution of Buyer Types in Your Area Using the Pie Chart that was Generated
Comment on the Trend in Volume of Sales by Dwelling Status from January 2010.

The Central Statistics Office online Data Visualisation Tool enables students to search how popular Irish baby names were/are in any given year in Ireland from 1964 to present. Using this tool students can see the popularity of their own name, or the names of their family, friends etc.

Maths teacher, James Carroll, has created a supporting educational resource pack to accompany the CensusAtSchool initiative in Ireland.

CensusAtSchools Presentation (191 slides)
This is the major document of the pack and is presented as a Powerpoint Slideshow and a PDF file. The idea is that students take the questionnaire and then explore key statistical concepts by analysing their own data (or the data provided in the EXCEL spreadsheet). For each of the aspects of the course, I presented an activity to introduce the concepts, a practical example using the data in the spreadsheet and followed it up with related exam questions. There is a menu system on both the slideshow and the pdf allowing easy navigation through the presentation.
CensusAtSchools Questions (38 Pages)
So this is a PDF document of all of the activities and exam questions. This can be given out to students who can then work away on exercises or be given exercises for homework. Most of the activities have solutions on the presentation though a couple (mostly open-ended questions) are left for the teachers to explore with their class.
CensusAtSchools Sample Data
So this was a randomly generated excel sheet with sample data for teachers who may not have the time to collect such data themselves. There are tools on the excel sheet for analysing the data and the sheet can be modified by teachers to work with their own classes results.
